Sydney Airport to Sydney City center fixed taxi fare trial to run for 18 months

From the 3rd of November 2025 for 18 months, all taxi trips from a taxi rank at Sydney International Airport (terminal 1 or T1) and Sydney Domestic Airport (terminals 2 and 3 or T2/T3) to Sydney city centre will be fixed at a rate of $60 for standard taxis, or $80 for wheelchair accessible taxis. This only applies to one-way trips from the airport to the CBD.

This trial will run for 18 months. The purpose of the trial is to provide transparency and to make it easier for passengers to determine taxi fares from the airport to Sydney’s city centre. Since the official legalisation and introduction of rideshare services like Uber, there has been a history of unscrupulous drivers who refuse to turn on their taxi meters, or charge passengers picked up from the airport exorbitant fees.

Under this trial, taxi drivers must have their meters on, and all travel fees must be included, specifically: tolls, taxes, levies, fees etc. The only extra fees they can charge are cleaning fees (maximum $120) and card payment processing (maximum 5% of the total fare).

What areas are counted as the Sydney CBD for this trial?

The areas this trial covers stretches from Central Station in the south, bounded by Lee Street, and Chalmers Street, to Dawes Point along Hicksons Road in the north, the outer boundaries of the Royal Botanic Gardens to the north east, and Darling Harbour to the west. Note: the map in the official webpage shows the Devonshire Street Tunnel as the southern-most boundary of the CBD that is included in this trial. However, the Devonshire Street Tunnel is an underground pedestrian tunnel that stretches from Central Station all the way to the University of Technology, Sydney. It is inaccessible to cars, and, above ground, it is a small plaza that is also inaccessible to cars. However, Mercure Hotel outside Central station and above the pedestrian tunnel, is included in this trial area.

Note: Harris Street forms the western side of the boundary of the trial area. It runs mostly north to south. If you are visiting the University of Technology, Sydney, know that the university is spread out among a large area in the CBD, the main campus is split in half by Harris Street, only places east of Harris Street is included in the trial, but the rest of the main university campus is just across the road and short distance (up to ~200m) away by foot.

Why now:
People rush to donate when a visible tragedy happens. The rest is ignored. Although my first cancer happened over 30 years ago when I was a small child, the consequences of the treatment is just as devastating, and even more so, since I was robbed of ever having a normal life from the beginning. My consequences are permanent and life-long. While it might not seem like a sudden event with great impact, the reality is, it is indeed an event with severe impacts. I live with the consequences of something I had no say in, every day, and it affects me minute to minute, in an increasingly severe manner, and I will always suffer the consequences, permanently. After years of trying to build financial independence despite my disabilities, I lost my savings through a scam out of desperation to try and leave an unsafe living situation. Because I cannot rely on paid employment, rebuilding those savings is not something I can possibly do alone.

The passage of time doesn’t make it better, in fact, it makes it worse. The long term effects of my cancer treatment gave me multiple permanent and degenerative disabilities and chronic medical conditions that requires ongoing health care and support. I have been long term unemployed as a result, and live in an unsupportive household with no other options. To make matters worse, out of desperation to get out of the hole I am in, I fell victim to a scam, losing my entire life savings and leaving me in complete ruin and further unable to change my situation. I am stuck in a vicious cycle because I cannot seek a better environment to move to without money, and I can’t earn money with all my health problems, and I can’t seek treatment interstate or overseas without money.
